Code for Sustainable Homes

The Code for Sustainable Homes (BREEAM Assessment) has been developed by the Building Research Establishment to encourage the utilisation of sustainable technologies in the development of new homes. All new homes are now required to have a rating against the Code.

The Code is an evaluation process which considers how a home is likely to perform in terms of issues such as water conservation, energy use, waste management and environmental impacts. Assessments are undertaken at both the design stage and after completion.

The Planning Company is now offering assessments against the Code as a new service for developers and builders of individual homes. These assessments once verified by BRE will allow a certificate to be issued for inclusion in the Home Information Pack.

Environmental performance is now becoming a more important consideration in people’s choice of home and a Code certificate demonstrating good performance will be a positive selling point.
